George C. Cheney of Peabody, April 6, 1932 – March 10, 2019

George C. Cheney, Jr, 86, of Peabody, died Sunday evening surrounded by his loving family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness.  He was the devoted husband of Joan (Casey) Cheney with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage.

Born in Saugus, he was the son of the late George C. Cheney, Sr., and Ruth (Sanderson) Cheney.  He was raised and educated in Saugus and has lived in Peabody for approximately 60 years.

George was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the United States Navy before his Honorable Discharge in 1954.  Following his military service, George was employed in many occupations, including milk delivery man for HP Hood in Charlestown, before embarking on a 33-year career as a Peabody Firefighter. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1998.

In retirement George enjoyed spending time with his entire family. He loved quiet time at home with Joan. He looked forward to family vacations in their RV. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, gardening, boating, fishing, and sailing. With his grandchildren, George attended many sporting events, Boy Scout activities, and various high-school-related activities. He loved storytelling and always had a joke or two for anyone in his presence. His great grandchildren were also an important part of his life and he cherished every moment he spent with them.

Besides his loving wife Joan, George is survived by his children John Cheney and his wife Diane; Cynthia Hart and her husband William; Michael Cheney and his partner Danielle; Thomas Twiss and his wife Lisa; Daniel Twiss; and Elizabeth Cheney; Grandchildren Nicole Duquette and her husband Bradley; Timothy Cheney and his wife Rae Beth; William Hart III; Kevin Hart; Rebecca Hart; Kyllian Twiss, Addison Twiss, Nathaniel Twiss, Mackenzie Twiss, Macullum Twiss, and Keonnor Twiss; Great Grandchildren Evan and Adam Duquette, Ethan and Marshall Cheney. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Jenney; brother David Cheney and wife Kathleen; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was predeceased by his children Daniel Cheney, Paul Twiss, and Cheona Cheney; and by his sister Joan Furtney.
