Obituary For Alfred Richard Mathews
Alfred Richard Mathews, 87, of Peabody, formerly of Manchester by the Sea, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers while surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Linda (Micalchuck) Mathews with whom he spent 58 years of marriage.
Born in Beverly on October 21, 1936, Alfred was raised and educated in Manchester by the Sea and cherished son of the late Charles and Annie (Brooks) Mathews.
Alfred served in the United States Army National Guard, Armored Division. Alfred’s passion was service; he dedicated more than 50 years in the Supermarket and Specialty Foods Industry as Store Director of Operations, he was a member of St. Thomas Parish and St. Joseph Church, St. Michael Society in Peabody, MA, and an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Mathews enjoyed his retirement years being close to his grandchildren and he took pride supporting all the scholastic and intramural sports, arts, and community activities that they participated in. Alfred was an avid gardener, enjoyed landscaping, and was meticulous to details, especially when it came to his “prized” tomatoes; he found peace working in his yard.
In addition to his wife Linda, Alfred is survived by his sons, Gary Mathews and his wife Karen of Peabody, Todd Mathews of Salem; four grandchildren, Christopher Mathews, Alexa (Mathews) Pierce, Olivia, and Nicolletta Mathews; his brother, Ronald Mathews; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Charles and William Mathews, and Judith (Mathews) Gamble of Manchester by the Sea and Betty (Mathews) Bentley of Bridgton, ME.
