Obituary For Arthur G. Velonis

Byfield – Arthur G. Velonis 67, beloved husband of Irene (Drivas) Velonis, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

Born in Salem, MA, he is the son of George S. and Anna (Jimokas) Velonis of Peabody. He was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School, class of 1972 and attended St. Francis College in Biddeford, Maine.

Arthur began his career at Peabody Supply Co. in Peabody, and eventually, decided to use his business skills to own and operate his restaurant, Bob’s Famous Fried Clams in Salem. Arthur made sure upon entering the restaurant, you felt like you were being welcomed into his home. Arthur then used this quality to manage Red’s Kitchen and Tavern in Peabody. He brought with him his undeniable charisma, creating everlasting relationships with customers and staff. Over the past few years, Arthur returned to the plumbing industry and was employed at O'Keefe Plumbing & Heating in Peabody.

Married to his wife Irene for forty-three years, they shared a special bond that demonstrated how important their relationship was to each other. In addition to Irene, Arthur is survived by his wonderful parents, George and Anna Velonis, his loving daughter, Althea Velonis, a sister, Anthie Jackson and her husband, Robert, a brother, Stephen Velonis and his wife, Julia, his mother-in-law, Mary Drivas, a brother-in-law, John Drivas and his wife, Lisa, a sister-in-law, Ann Malatos and her husband, George and adoring nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews who will all miss him dearly. Arthur lived with his family in Andover for many years and later moved to Byfield. Arthur was a loving husband, father, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, godfather and friend who will forever leave his mark.

Arthur was a ray of sunshine. Whenever he greeted you, it was with warmth, a big hug, and often, a corny joke. His smile was infectious. He made everyone he spoke to feel heard. At work, he welcomed everyone with open arms, and made his patrons and employees feel like family. He embodied the way we all should live our lives, with an abundance of love and laughter. May we continue to honor his memory by acting with the same kindness, understanding, and good sense of humor. ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. One of the good guys...Arthur Velonis. You were as much a part of the Cassis/Pappafotopoulos families as your own, and 'Uncle Arthur' to my kids. Whenever we saw you, your huge smile lit up the room. 'Hi Auntie Cee,' you would call out to me by the nickname given to me by my nieces and nephews; with a big Teddy Bear hug and kiss. Art always had a kind word for everyone, particularly my children. He would say, 'They are really great you know...' which meant the world to Jon and me. We will always remember the great times in Scituate, laughing and joking with you. Gosh you were so quick-witted! Who else could crack us up like you!? Our hearts are broken, but your love for your family shall endure. We will never forget you. Our sincerest condolences, Cookie and Ali.

I am so very sorry for the loss of Arthur ( Arty). Oh boy! I have so many memories from living next door to you since we were born, then 1st grade at the Farnsworth to Graduating high school. We had a wonderful childhood growing up on Violet Road...But the laughs we have had over the years, from playing kickball, tag, dodgeball, ice skating at the Wells to just hanging out in front of the house and the old neighborhood. I think you were the first person to call me "Lau". You always had a jolly smile on your face. I will always remember your contagious laughter and that twinkle in yours eyes. Arty was a very loving caring person that you always gravitated towards always a kindness to him. My parents adored you, Cooky and your daughter. They were so sad when you moved away...but happy for you. I will always remember your kindness to Gracie and Mel. My heart aches for your families loss and give Grace and Mel a kiss for me. Love you my dear childhood friend. Lau
