Obituary For Daniel Peter Katsarakes

Daniel Peter Katsarakes of Peabody and Lynn, 80, peacefully passed away on the Fourth of July. He was the beloved husband of Janet (Ostaszewski) Katsarakes, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

Born in Peabody on December 26, 1941, he was the son of the late Steven G. and Catherine (Psoinos) Katsarakes. He graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1960. Danny was a standout athlete in football. He enjoyed the game of football throughout his whole life, especially in later years when watching his grandson and namesake follow in his footsteps.

Danny was very proud of his Greek heritage. In 1959, along with his lifelong friend Johnny Marco Apostolides, he was a founding member of The Levendes Orchestra and entertained many people over the years as a drummer, singer and MC. Danny worked as a barber and owned The Clipper Barber Shop in Wilmington, where he gave many of his younger cousins and nephews their first haircuts. He then went on to open and manage one of the first nightclubs in the city of Boston called the Bacchanal. In the late 1970’s he very proudly became a Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff and Superior Court Officer. Following his retirement, he opened a restaurant with his wife and children in Middleton, called Oliver’s Delicious Food.

Danny was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. He loved to volunteer and cook for his church community. He was a member of The Ahepa. He was a founding member and past president of the St. Vasilios Men’s Club. He was a member of the Order of Masonry as well as the Shriners, where he volunteered for many years at the Shriners Circus.

Danny was known to all as the life of the party. He made people laugh wherever he went. He did not have a selfish bone in his body, and he always wanted everyone to be together and have fun. His absolute favorite thing to do was to spend time with his grandchildren and he never missed a game, a performance or a chance to go for an ice cream. In return, all the kids loved their Papou more than anything in the world.

In addition to the love of his life, his “Machi,” Danny is survived by his children, Catherine (Katsarakes) and Michael Geomelos of Peabody and Tracy (Katsarakes) and Chris Gangi of Middleton, and his grandchildren: Geena, Toni and Danny Gangi and Janet and Deana Geomelos. He is happily reunited with his beloved granddaughter Tessa Geomelos in heaven.

Danny is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Irene and David O’Hara, brother and sister-in-law, George and Kondylo Katsarakes of CT and sister-in-law Ann (Zetes) Katsarakes of CT, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Danny’s funeral will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Service at 10:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Paleologos St Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Lake St, Peabody.

Expressions of sympathy can be made in his name to the St. Vasilios Men’s Club, 5-7 Paleologos St, Peabody, MA 01960.

To Janet and family, we're thinking of you at this very sad time. During the many years of us all being involved in the West School & music in Peabody, We always enjoyed seeing you and Danny (Mr. K), and that huge smile of his, at the events. He always made me feel like a part of the family and even expressed appreciation for what I was doing for the kids (not many think to do that & that's OK), but He did . He organically said those "little special things" that one never forgets, just one thing that made him very special to me. We shared our love for doing hair for so many years, and compared some stories (I can't repeat) LOL. We were both drummers, I got my Instrumental start as a percussionist, learning all of those many Instruments, but never mastered the drum set!! He always said "practice you can still get it". It was "our" little thing. He in a band, me in an orchestra both knowing that the beat from the skins were essential and fun!! He wasn't happy that I gave them up for guitar and encouraged me to go back to it! We also shared dedication to family. He was so much like my dad. Fun, entertaining, & enjoyed cooking for many! They loved being musicians, (my dad accordion and Violin) & they loved their ethnic, religious roots, and their kids/grandkids meant everything! Danny told me he regretted working so much with the band on the holidays, but knew his wife would make it OK, ❤️ I loved that he recognized you as the heart and manager of the home and was so happy that with your help, his kids shared his love for music! I won't forget our many conversations (he was magnetic), It was an honor to have known him. Years passed, much has happened in both families, but Joe & I want you to know that we won't forget the good times we shared and that we will always cherish the connection. 💕 Our deepest sympathy, condolences and love to all of you. We're sure our amazing Tessa was right there at heaven's gates waving him through and happy to be reunited with her papou xoxox With love and affection, Marina and Joey Ruggiero and family xox ❤️💔❤️ Marina Ruggiero

We will all miss Danny, who always had a smile and happy face. He always called us cousins when he greeted us and not by our first names. Peter & Vivian Mandragouras
