Obituary For Despina Drougas

Despina peacefully passed away at her home on the morning of June 18, 2022. She was born in Peabody in 1924. Before her second birthday Despina’s now late parents, Arthur Tsonis & Maria Macropoulos moved their family back to Greece to their family farm at the village of Valira, located just outside Kalamata. There, Despina, along with her three late brothers, Leonidas; Constantine (Dino or Charles); and Demetrius (James); grew up working on the family farm. Despina’s family endured the tough times of the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Second World War (1940-1945) and German occupation. After the war, Despina returned to America and Peabody in 1946 where she worked first at Hydron and then at GTE Sylvania, both located in Salem. She retired in 1986. In 1953, Despina married her beloved late husband Michael Drougas. Despina is survived by her four children, son Nickolas of Peabody; daughter Angeline (Kiki) and her husband Robert Benoit of Reading; son Arthur and his wife Kim of Andover; and son Demosthenes (Demo) and his wife Carmela of New Fairfield, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Despina and Bianca of New Fairfield, Connecticut, and numerous nieces and nephews. Despina was a beautiful loving wife and a loving mom, always very gracious and grateful to her family and friends and in showing kindness to her neighbors. To those who knew her, she was well loved and respected. She enjoyed flower gardening and was also an extraordinary cook, specializing in all kinds of Greek dishes and pastries, and especially enjoyed preparing dinner parties for family gatherings during religious holidays and other events. She will be missed by her adoring family, relatives, and friends. Despina was a lifelong member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church and of St. Vasilios Philoptochos Athena Chapter.

Growing up Mrs Drougas was my second mother. Her son Demo and I were inseparable growing up and I knew that when she raised her voice and spoke in Greek that we were in trouble! As an Italian I learned to love Greek food. What a phenomenal cook Mrs D was. I consider the whole Drougas' family. My heart goes out to a special woman and family! Love you Mrs Drougas!
