Obituary For Dr. Thomas Austin Grady
Dr. Thomas Austin Grady of Topsfield passed away peacefully at his home on October 24th at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Ruth (Donovan) Grady who passed away in 2021 with whom he celebrated 59 years of marriage.
He was born in Salem, MA on March 31, 1933 and was the eldest son of the late Raymond F. and Harriet J. (Lyons) Grady.
Tom was a graduate of Lynn English High School, class of 1950. He furthered his studies at Tufts University & Tufts School of Dentistry graduating in 1957. He proudly served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy demonstrating his commitment to his country.
Dr. Grady was a highly respected dentist in the town of Topsfield for 40 years. He was dedicated to his patients.
A resident of Topsfield for sixty-five years, Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. Tom was a devoted husband and father known for his intellect and love of art as a painter in water color. He was an avid golfer winning tournaments in four different decades at Salem Country Club.
Tom was a strategic bridge player still shuffling the deck every Tuesday evening up at Great Hill where he resided. Dr. Grady was also a die hard fan of all Boston sports teams. In addition, he served on the Masconomet School Committee and on the Topsfield Board of Health, and in his earlier days, coached his children in the Topsfield Athletic Association.
One of Tom’s most recent toasts was raising his glass and cheerfully stating, “Neither below you nor above you, but always with you.”
Tom is survived by his children, Dr. Thomas A. Grady Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Fayetteville, NY, Edward L. Grady and his wife MaryBeth of Topsfield, Susan R. Grady of Danvers, Elizabeth Lyons Duffy and her husband Robert of Darien, CT, and Sarah R. Grady of Middleton, and his predeceased son, Stephen A. Grady; his 10 grandchildren, Kaitlin Kilbride, Edward Grady, Reagan Parrott, Samuel Grady, Robert Duffy, Nicholas Duffy, Thomas Duffy, Mary Duffy, Patrick Grady, and Ryan Grady; and his 9 adored great grandchildren; his sister, Mary McGowan and her husband Robert of Danvers; his sisters-in-law, Joan Grady, Mary Gilligan, and Virginia Ryan; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visiting hours will be held at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. Peabody, on Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 3pm to 6pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, 12 Park St. Topsfield on Monday at 11AM followed by his interment at Pine Grove Cemetery in Topsfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Thomas’ memory to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, www.macular.org.
