Obituary For Eleanor Marie Scanlan

Eleanor Marie Scanlan was born September 15, 1925, in Boston. She was the daughter of Martin Lawrence and Mary Ann (Jones) O’Neill. She departed this life on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, in Peabody and was pre-deceased by her husband, Walter, and her sister, Anna. She is survived by her five children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Eleanor was the proud mother of: Kathleen and her husband, Don Fitzpatrick, William and his wife, Pam, Richard, Leo and his wife, Bethanie, and Marty and his wife, Dr. Eileen Sordyl. Grandchildren include Katie Fitzpatrick, Meghan and her husband, Tyler Chafe, Billy Scanlan and Genevieve Scanlan. Her great grandchild is Eva Chafe. She is also survived by her first cousin, Helen Duffy.

Eleanor grew up in Medford and graduated from Medford High School. She did clerical work in and around Boston and especially enjoyed summer weekends with friends at Hampton Beach. Her lifelong love for traveling began with a cruise to Bermuda in 1949. Eleanor and Walter were married on May 27, 1951, in Malden, MA. They moved from Medford to Peabody in 1957 to purchase a home and raise their growing family. In addition to being a full-time mom, Eleanor worked as an executive assistant to the general manager for Jordan Marsh at the Northshore Mall and continued working after her retirement for the Peabody School system distributing science materials to the grammar schools. Besides travelling, she loved the beach, her pets, flowers, reading and gardening and was an active member of the Peabody Garden Club and the Red Hat Society.

A Wake and Funeral Service will be held at Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home in Peabody. The wake will be on Monday, April 25, from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be at 11 am, Tuesday, April 26, with burial immediately after at Puritan Lawn. Memorial contributions can be sent to Care Dimensions Hospice, Danvers, MA.

    To the whole Scanlan Crew, sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom. She was a terrific lady. Have many fond memories of her "at the top" of Reed Road. She always had time to give you a kind word and a quick smile.

    To Eleanor's family: I am so sorry for your loss. I worked in the cash office at Jordan March with Eleanor for many years. She was a kind and wonderful woman.
