George Chronis, 97, lifelong resident of Peabody, passed peacefully in his sleep, 22 November 2021.

George lived a full and exciting life, a life spanning eleven decades from 1924 to 2021. He grew up in a time we would not see again with icemen, fish mongers, and green grocers plying their trades on the neighborhood streets, milk delivery from a wagon, horse-drawn snowplows, and vibrant immigrant families together in the larger community.

He saw and experienced firsthand major world events and was a Purple Heart veteran, having served in the US Army in the Pacific in WWII on a tramp steamer delivering defense goods for the Army, with the occasional run with such things as a boat full of cigarettes and beer, that ran round trips from Brisbane Australia to Port Moresby New Guinea.

Prior to his military service he worked in Detroit at the Dodge factory as well as Ford Aircraft. Upon returning from service, a paternal uncle offered him funding start a business. He began a small dry-cleaning business with his brother Ernie. Later with his youngest brother Jimmy, the business expanded to Royal Cleaners on Lowell Street, across from the Peabody High School now stands.

After closing the business in the late 70’s, he worked in a variety of jobs but would go back to dry cleaning working for many shops, eventually retiring nearly 30 years ago.

George was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Angelina (Perrotis), his wife Charlotte (Metropolis) Chronis, and all his younger siblings Ernest Chronis, James Chronis, and Anna Nekolopoulos. He is survived by his immediate and extended family, his daughter Angela Hastings and her partner Tom Fitzpatrick, his son Peter Chronis, his granddaughter Haley Hastings, his step grandsons Christopher Fitzpatrick and Mason Hastings, in-laws Georgia Metropolis, Anna Chronis, Marion Chronis, James and Sophie Metropolis, along with several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody and his Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 9:45 AM at the funeral home to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
