Obituary For John Christopher
John Christopher, 93, of Salem died early Wednesday morning surrounded by his family at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness.
Born Yiannis Christoforou in Sychari, Cyprus, John was the son of the late Christoforou and Julia (Angenis) Christoforou. He married his beloved wife Christala (also of Sychari) in 1951, and the couple had two children before emigrating to the U.S. via Ellis Island, which today bears the Christopher name on its Wall of Honor. The family went on to settle in Salem, where John and Christala owned and operated the Crystal Luncheonette (“Crystal Lunch” to its myriad regulars) for more than 25 years before retiring.
Called “Uncle John” even by those to whom he bore no relation, John was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and all-around family man renowned for being perennially helpful and kind.
John is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, his brother and sister-in-law Sotiris and Eleni Christopher of FL, his daughter and son-in-law Dina and John Chamatsos of Peabody, his daughter-in-law Caoilfhionn Christopher of North Adams, eight grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren; he was predeceased by his son Chris Christopher, his granddaughter Elaine Chamatsos, and his four siblings.
John will be remembered for his love of singing, Cypriot poetry, the Red Sox, and drinking red wine (“krasaki”) and whiskey (“wiskaki”) – much to his wife’s chagrin.
A visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, followed by an 11:00 AM funeral service at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, MA 01960.
