Obituary For John P Dowd

John P. Dowd, 81, of Peabody, died Sunday evening surrounded by his family at his home following a lengthy illness. He was the devoted husband of Ada (Wallis) Dowd with whom he shared over 58 years of marriage.

Born in Dorchester, he was the son of the late Patrick and Margaret (Behan) Dowd. He was raised and educated in Dorchester and was a graduate of Dorchester High School, class of 1958. He has lived in Peabody for the past 53 years.

Upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for over 3 years before his honorable discharge in June of 1962.

John was passionate about his family, local politics, his grandchildren’s sporting events and his Irish Heritage.

He is survived by his loving wife Ada, his three loving children and their spouses, Sean and Sandra Dowd of Peabody, Brian and Sue Dowd of Rowley, and Jodi and Phil Mitchell of Peabody. He also leaves seven grandchildren who adored him, Kyle Multner and his wife Jen, Kellie Multner and her fiancé Kevin Clarke, Nicole Mitchell and her fiancé Ross Roy, David Hoar III, Hayley, Riley, and Loic Dowd, and also leaves four great grandchildren, Charlee and Cash Multner, and Nova and Zoey Clarke. He is also survived by his two brothers, James Dowd of Dorchester, and Edward Dowd of Braintree.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody and his Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at the South Church, 60 Prospect St, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Lake St, Peabody.

    I worked with John at New England Telephone in Salem many years ago. John was always upbeat and fun and was a pleasure to be around. I was sorry to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to his wife Ada and his family.

    What a fun man he was. I will never forget as a child delivering the Salem news to him. I rang the doorbell to collect payment and he opened the door and pushed out his dentures at me :-). It freaked me out! I had never seen anyone with dentures before. It actually has made for a great memory! My sincerest condolences to all of his loved ones. He now lives in the house or god probably hanging with my dad 🙂

    I will always remember John's wry sense of humor. His eyes would light up and look at you like you were in on some mischief with him. Ada was the biggest fan of his humor which made it even funnier. You will be so missed John. Rest in peace. Love, Lee
