Maria D. (Veiga) Bettencourt, 80, of Peabody, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Salem Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of Manuel E. Bettencourt with whom she shared over 51 years of marriage prior to his passing in March of 2014.

Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Amadeu and Doroteia (Bettencourt) Veiga. Mrs. Bettencourt was raised and educated in Portugal. Upon marrying her husband, Manuel, she immigrated to the United States in 1966, settling in Peabody where she has since resided.

Maria was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and was also member of the Holy Ghost Society in Peabody. Some of her favorite hobbies included cooking and baking. She also loved to travel, and she especially enjoyed cruises. Above all, she truly loved her family and enjoyed spending quality time with them. Maria will be remembered for her bright smile that would always light up the room. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, cousin, and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Edmund Bettencourt, her granddaughter Meaghan B. Machado and her husband Jesse Machado, and her great grandson, Leonardo Machado, all of Peabody; her sister-in-law, Maria Nellie LaPonte, her brother-in-law, Jerry LaPonte, and her cousins, Daniel and Goreti Silva. She is also survived by many cousins and friends.

Arrangements: Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave, Peabody on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, on Sunday, September 25, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
