Mildred “Millie” (Costa) Justo, 101, of Peabody, died Saturday afternoon at the Ledgewood Nursing in Beverly following a brief illness.

Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Silva) Costa. She was a lifelong resident of Peabody and attended Peabody Public Schools.

Millie had worked in the Leather and Electronic Industry, first with GTE Sylvania for 25 years, then 18 years in the leather industry, 15 years at Cox Leather and 3 years with Car Leather, and finally with Bomack and Varian for 12 years, retiring in March of 1981.

Millie was very active in the community; she was a longtime volunteer for the Peabody Red Cross and Salem Hospital Surgi Center and was a member of the Portuguese Continental Union. She was active at Our Lady of Fatima Church and served as Chairman of Pledges/Memorials for 18 years and was a Sunday School Teacher for the Portuguese Catholic Mission under the direction of Father Charles Saudade. She also loved to travel, especially to Portugal and Europe. For the past 20 years, Millie enjoyed making Afghans and donating them to Santa’s Magic for the US Veterans.

She is survived by her nephew, Reynold Mello of Stoneham and by her two cousins, Elsa Vieira of Peabody and Maria Mello of Salem who both cared for her during the past 20 years. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Mello.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody, followed by her Funeral Mass at 12:30 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
