Obituary For Phyllis M. Hazel

Lynnfield - Phyllis M. Hazel, age 96, formerly of Lynn, died Sunday, October 30, 2022. She was the wife of the late John R. “Jack” Hazel with whom she shared 43 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Eugene J. “Henry” Marrin and Elizabeth H. “Betty” (Chisholm) Marrin. Phyllis attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School, graduated in 1943 from St. Mary’s High School and Burdett College in 1948.

She worked at the General Electric Company in Lynn where she met Jack. After they married she left the GE to raise their two children. In 1965 Phyllis went back to work in the City of Lynn Health Department as a Senior Clerk retiring in 1994 as Head Clerk.

Early on, Phyllis and her best friend and mother, Betty, were energetic grass root volunteers in many local political campaigns. They were fiercely independent and sparked or readily engaged in many impassioned debates at family and other gatherings. They enjoyed long walks together and toured the City of Lynn routinely; especially the Lynn Shore. Later Phyllis reunited with her longtime friend, Grace Gilmore, and logged many more miles in Lynn and Lynnfield; often travelling up to five miles a trip until her 91st year. She also enjoyed organizing friends and associates for group travel and tours.

Phyllis travelled many summers to visit with her son Richard of Newport, VT and grandson Robert of Colchester, VT. Back home, she relished family get-togethers with her son, George and his wife, Meryl of Lynnfield, granddaughter, Erica Mattia and her husband, Christopher of Lynnfield, grandson, Mark Hazel and his wife, Jacquelyn of Windham, NH, granddaughter, Lisa Geraghty and her husband, Colin of Reading and her seven great grandchildren, Lauren, Michael and Matthew Mattia, Benjamin and Claire Hazel and Brooke and Sean Geraghty.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Donald F. “Don” Marrin, Kenneth J “Ken” Marrin and Henry “Hank” Marrin. The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care by her special caregiver, Marina, caregiver, Debbie and Beth Israel Lahey Health at Home Hospice Care, especially RN Chris.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral service and internment were held privately on Friday, November 4, 2022. Donations in her memory can be made at www.stmaryslynn.com. Arrangements by Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody.
