Obituary For Salvatore J Pomer
Salvatore J Pomer, 96, of Peabody, died Monday July 25 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Joanne (Langan) Pomer.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sadie (Gangi) Pomer. He was raised and educated in Boston. After their marriage in 1956, he and Joanne settled in Peabody.
Salvatore first served in WWII with the United States Army Air Force as a tail gunner aboard a B24 Liberator. He was discharged in 1946 and then reenlisted with the Air Force and served from 1951 to 1952 during the Korean War before his honorable discharge.
Salvatore worked for the State of Massachusetts DPW as a Public Relations representative before retiring years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Lynnfield and through his work, he was Honorary Alumni of UNH.
Sal, Salvi, or known to many as PaSalvi, was a very kind, gentle and generous man. The family meant so much to him and was loved by all. Over the years, he supported many people and causes such as Our Lady of the Assumption church, veteran’s programs and numerous social events. If someone asked for help, Sal was always someone you could count on. Sal was clearly a product of his generation. You didn't ask for anything or any help. You took care of your family first. And you never used the words “throw it away.” Certainly not in his vocabulary.
There are several WWII stories he would tell but not many. He kept those memories close. His travels across the globe with family and friends gave him many great memories. Most recently, PaSalvi became a great grandfather when Benji Gendron came into the world on Sal’s 96th birthday.
Salvatore is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Joel Brenner of Peabody, his two grandchildren Jonathan Brenner and Sarah and her husband Ryan Gendron, and his great grandson, Benji Gendron. He is also survived by four sisters, Rose Whalen of Randolph, Dorothy Haddad of Weymouth, and Eleanor West and Marie Pomer both of Peabody. Besides his loving wife Joanne, he was predeceased by his siblings, Dr. Frank Pomer, Joseph Pomer, Margaret Yarosh, and Jeanette Regnier.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Honor Flight New England, PO Box 16287 Hooksett, NH, 03106 or online at www.honorflightnewengland.org.
