Obituary For Sister Therese Julie Fitzmaurice

Sister Therese Julie Fitzmaurice, age 96, went peacefully home to her good God June 14 at the Saint Julie Residential Care Center in Ipswich, MA. She was born Therese Marie Fitzmaurice in 1924 in Waltham, MA to parents, John Fitzmaurice and Margaret (O’Neill) of Waltham. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur August 4, 1942, taking her First Vows in 1945 and Perpetual Vows in 1950.

Sister Therese brought beauty to the world through her music. She received a BA in piano from Emmanuel College, as well as a Master of Music and PHD from Boston University. She was a music teacher in many greater Boston schools and spent many years teaching piano at Emmanuel College. Sister Therese mentored many young musicians and directed many musical performances. She shared her talents and enthusiasm with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur forming and directing choirs for many occasions.

Sr. Therese had a heart as wide as the world. Her ministries included parish and campus ministry in Alabama. She challenged others by helping to found the Notre Dame Mission Volunteers USA. Sr. Therese served the congregation in various leadership roles, always open to try new things and to deepen her life as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. She proclaimed, “I always thought of myself as being in the apostolate of the beautiful.”

She is survived by her brother, Arthur G. Fitzmaurice and his wife Norina of Waltham, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her siblings, Francis M. Fitzmaurice, Isabelle Yankauskis, Margaret Dougherty and Mary Fitzmaurice. Sr. Therese is also survived by her Sisters and Associates in the Notre Dame community, her many friends and former students, and the devoted staff of the St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated privately at Our Lady Queen Chapel in Ipswich, MA, on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 10:30 am. Viewing at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel. Please call to register at 978-356-4381. Memorial Donations may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 30 Jeffreys Neck Road, Ipswich, MA 01938. The Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, MA is directing arrangements.
