Acton – Stephen Gargas 89, beloved husband of the late Nicoletta “Anita” (Kouvaras) Gargas, died Thursday, May 18, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Peter and Catherine (Hatzigeorge) Gargas. He was the tenth of ten children in a large loving Greek family. He was raised and educated in Peabody, graduating from Peabody High School in 1951, where he played football, basketball, and baseball for the Tanners.

Soon after he enrolled at Wentworth Institute in Boston into their Building and Construction program which he completed in 1953. In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S Army and served with the Southern European Task Force (SETAF) battalion in Vicenza, Italy as a radio control specialist and was honorably discharged in 1958.

On July 10, 1960 he married his wife Anita, who was his love of his life. They met at a church picnic and sang in the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Choir together. They were married 61 years upon her death in 2021.

While employed as a carpenter at GE in Lynn, MA he enrolled in the Night College program at Northeastern University and after nine years of taking one or two classes at a time, while working full time and raising a family he received his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1967.

Mr. Gargas had been employed and held various engineering and management roles at Raytheon Technologies for close to 30 years with also short period of years with Simmonds Precision in Vergennes, VT and Data General in Southboro. MA.

A resident of Acton, MA since 1979, prior to that he had resided in South Burlington, VT for two years and Peabody, MA for forty-four years. Steve enjoyed time with his family at home cooking, tending to his vegetable garden and various carpentry projects around the house.

An avid Red Sox fan and all-around Boston sports fan. He coached his three sons in youth sports, taught them to ski and mentored them in scouts. Aside from all the activities he spent with his children when they were young, he always made himself available for his family whether it be help with a small household project or someone to talk to, he provided a great source of stability, comfort, guidance, and love.

He and his wife Anita later had a second residence on Cape Cod where they spent many summers in their retirement years relaxing and picking up gifts for the grandchildren.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving him are three sons, James Gargas and his wife, Kathy, Anthony Gargas and his wife, Kristin and Christopher Gargas, six grandchildren. Diana, Jennifer, Stephen, Kaitlyn, Jacqueline and Teddy, his older sister, Aspacia Cassidy of Peabody, his sisters-in-law, Cynthia Gargas of Danvers, Patricia Gargas of Peabody and Margaret Geckos of Potomac, MD and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Anita, his parents and siblings Anthony, John, Charles, Michael, Angelo, James, Marian Theodosian and Stavicha Scangas.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, Friday, May 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
