Obituary For Thomas F. Charlton

Peabody – Thomas F. Charlton age 96, affectionately known as “Papa Tom”, husband of the late Joyce (Thomas) Charlton, died Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the Herrick House Assisted Living in Beverly. Papa Tom spent his last days surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Winburne, PA, he was the son of the late Thomas W. and Ebba (Johnson) Charlton. He was raised in Buffalo, NY and graduated from Kennsington High School in Buffalo. He continued his education earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo.

An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Having served in the Pacific Theatre.

in 1950, he married his love of his life, Joyce of Buffalo and began their life together in Tonawanda NY. His work transferred them to New England and they settled in Peabody. A man of faith, he had a great love and appreciation for his church, the Messiah Lutheran Church in Lynnfield where he was a member for many years.

Mr. Charlton had been employed for many years by the General Mills Company until the time of his retirement.

An avid sports fan, he was instrumental in launching the Babe Ruth Baseball League in Peabody, was a huge Red Sox fan and he truly enjoyed golfing in his retirement. He also enjoyed gardening at his home in Peabody. Most of all, he had a great love for his family and cherished his grandchildren, following them at all their sports and never missed an important event in their life. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughter, Debbie McCarthy and her husband, Kev of Amesbury, his son, Tom Charlton and his wife, Marsha of Beverly, five grandchildren, Caitie Kelley and her husband, Keven of Natick, Brian McCarthy and his wife, Siobhan of Littleton, Ryan Charlton and his partner, Ashley Lojko of Peabody, Ashley Brown and her husband, Ben of Beverly and Patrick Charlton of Beverly, fifteen great grandchildren, Jake, Ryan, Brooke and Tommy Kelley, Declan Alannah, Maeve, Desmond, Seamus and Cillian McCarthy, Elizabeth and Thomas Charlton and Bodie, Lola and Beckett Brown, a sister-in-law, Jan Stocz and her husband, Frank, a brother-in-law, Ronald Thomas and nieces, Pam, Cherie, Michelle and Heather. He was also the brother of the late Ken Charlton.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 708 Lowell St., Lynnfield, Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Messiah Lutheran church, 708 Lowell St., Lynnfield, MA 01940 or Haven from Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody, MA 01960.
