Obituary For Todd Richard Howcroft

Todd Richard Howcroft of Peabody passed away on Tuesday, August 30. He was 46 years old. Todd’s spirit was strong, and his attitude was graciously impressive throughout his hard-fought, heroic ten-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Todd leaves behind his loving wife, Blair, and their precious daughter, Violet; mother, Carol A. Howcroft (Jablonka); father, Richard J. Howcroft, and stepmother, Janet Howcroft; brother, Bryan Howcroft, and brother-in-law, Roshan Mahato; brother, Michael T. Howcroft; in-laws, Ronald and Marilyn Lustig; and sister-in-law, Darrah Lustig, and fiancé, Hubert Umschaden. Todd is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, especially his closest friends, Adam Provost, Derek Provost, and Andrew St. Pierre. To know Todd is to love Todd. Born, raised, and settled in Peabody, Todd found strength and abundant love in his family. A devoted father (“Daddo”), Todd never missed a moment by Violet’s side, and the two could often be found dancing, running around the yard, and playing video games. A dog lover, Champ, Rooney, and Louie will run to greet him, and Izzie, will continue to protect his ladies. Todd was an amazing cook and grill master¬¬—our tables will never be the same, our plates never quite full. Todd was an avid fisherman, often found on the shores of Rockport and Peabody’s Brown’s Pond. Sundays in the fall were for football, chicken wings, and popcorn from E.W. Hobbs at Salem Willows. A lover of music, Todd had eclectic taste, enjoyed the local music scene, and followed national acts, including Phish, Strangefolk, Dr. Dog, and The Black Keys among others. Todd made a life-long career at South Essex Sewerage District in Salem and leaves behind many coworkers who became friends. Thank you to all our family and friends who supported Todd and his family during this extremely difficult time.

Thank you to the wonderful nurses, doctors, and staff of the Beth Israel BMT unit. You helped care for Todd during his courageous journey and many of you became friends. Thank you to his anonymous bone marrow donor, his genetic twin, for the tremendous gift of your donations, which gave Todd the biggest chance to beat this awful disease. Your generosity allowed our family more precious time together. A private celebration of life will take place at a later date. In memory of Todd, please consider donating blood, platelets, or bone marrow. These are precious, unrivaled tools that allow a person a chance at survival.

Such sadness as I hear of Todd's passing. While I had not seen Todd in well over 20 years, my memories of him are vivid. We spent a lot of time together during his senior year of high-school and then again when he started working at South Essex. We spent much of our time going on drives. I want to say he had a new Mazda at the time. He was usually listening to jam bands, but would readily put on my request for Crosby,Stills and Nash or Cream. He would even sing sometimes and twirl the end of his hair when deep in thought. Despite his tall frame, he carried himself gently. At times we ran with a more rebellious crowd, but he always seemed to stay within his own moral compass. Some of this I'm sure because he had such love for his family. He spoke so highly of each member of his family , which I always admired. He was so proud when Bryan started college. He was also happy to see Mike ,home with a group of friends to play pool in the basement as we watched. He loved to laugh but seemed just as happy to watch others laugh. One thing that I remember clearly is that he came to the door every time he picked me up and spoke to my parents. He never once waited outside beeping his horn. He was "up for anything" but at the same time liked familiarity of the same things , which back then included various outdoor venues such as Endicott Park or Danvers Res, getting a movie at Video Marquee,Strawberries Music , a few of the same restaurants over and over where we knew the staff, and long drives to pass the time. I was happy to hear he had his own family which I always knew would suit him well. Rest easy Todd, I'm sure our dear Fitz will greet you with a smile. She is probably even wearing one of your flannels and has that bootleg you thought you lost in her back pocket.

In our early 20's Todd was one of my best friends. He was at my house more often than not. We experienced life together, growing up together!
