Maria da Guia Tomaz, 84, of Peabody, passed away Tuesday morning at her residence, in the presence of her loving family. She was the wife of the late João Tomaz, who passed away in 2017. Maria was born on June 1, 1936, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, daughter of the late João De Sousa Da Silva and Deolinda Da Gloria (Santos) Da Silva. She was raised and educated there prior to immigrating to the United States. She had worked as a seamstress for many years, starting her career at Ideal Baby Shoe in Danvers, 17 years at the Bridal Shop in Salem, Jordan Marsh, and then Macy’s, prior to retiring. She was a longtime member of the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost in Peabody. Maria enjoyed tending to her garden, spending time at the beach, taking vacations to her home island of Graciosa in the Azores, but most importantly spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, John A. Tomaz and his wife Ann, Fernando M Tomaz and Kathleen McCormick, Deolinda Gomes and her husband Saul; her grandchildren, Christina Gomes, John E. Tomaz and his wife Maura, U.S. Army Sgt. Alexandre Gomes, and Patrick Tomaz; a great granddaughter, Zulia Tomaz; two godchildren, Maria De Lourdes and Diana Lima, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Manuel Silva. Maria’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the nurses at VNA Hospice and FCP caregiver Donnika Davis for the compassion and care they provided for Maria. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, from 5 – 8 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. All attendees are required to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. Funeral services will be private.
