Obituary of Raymond John Silva

Raymond John Silva, 90, of Beverly, passed away Friday evening at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. Raymond was born in Peabody, MA, on January 25, 1930, son of the late Frank and Anna (Picanco) Silva. He was raised and educated in Peabody, and was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1947. He was the captain of the Peabody High School baseball team in 1947, and was also voted the All-Star player, which ultimately led him to tryout for the Boston Red Sox. He went on the serve in the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1951. Raymond went on to start up his own business, Tremont Market, to which he owned/ managed for over 67 years. Tremont Market, which to many was affectionately known as “Raimundo”, wasn’t just his business, it was his life’s passion and he used that passion to help countless families in the Portuguese community, and also Portuguese immigrants that settled in Peabody. Raymond was also an avid golfer, being a longtime member of the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club, where he went on to win many championships, and also Possum Trot Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, SC, where he got his first hole-in-one in 2008. Along with golfing, he was also an avid bowler, bowling for the City of Peabody Bowling League, in which Tremont Market sponsored for over 30 years. He was also a member of the Portuguese American War Veterans (The Post), Knights of Columbus ,and The Elks, all in Peabody. Raymond will be forever remembered as a kind, selfless, and generous person, using his resources to assist people in any way he could, and always putting others before himself. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by the love of his life, and longtime companion, Maria Gil of Beverly; his children, Glen Silva of Georgetown, Brian Silva of Myrtle Beach, SC, Faith Ann “Missy” McKinnon and her husband James of Peabody; his grandchildren, Thomas McKinnon, James McKinnon, Matthew Mckinnon, Nicholas Silva, Brian Silva Jr., Tracey Webb, Shauna Moyer; 13 great-grandchildren, his niece Carol Olson, and his extended family Maria Gil Sr., Bobby Gill, John Gil, Maria Nunes, Diane Pais, & Anthony Pais. He was predeceased by a son, Craig Silva, his sibligns, Lucinda Cronin, Mary Anketell, and Palmira Maga. There will be a Drive-up Visitation held on Thursday, May 21 from 10A.M – 12P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Everyone is asked to enter the parking lot of the funeral home via the entrance on LYNN ST, and then a staff member will direct you accordingly. We ask everyone to REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLES, in accordance with the social distancing rules described by federal, state, and local officials. Burial will private.
