Obituary For Alvaro J. "Joe" Mendes

Peabody – Alvaro J. “Joe” Mendes 76, beloved husband of Quelminda M. “Kay” Mendes, died Friday, September 22, 2023 at the Beverly Hospital.

Born in Terceira, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late José Lourenco Mendes and Maria da Conceicao (Vieira) Mendes. He emigrated to the United States on July 3, 1970 and three weeks later, married his wife, Kay with whom they have shared fifty three years of marriage together.

A resident of Peabody for the past fifty-three years, he was a member of the CLC Portugues club in Peabody. He was a loving husband, brother, uncle and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Maria Odete da Silva of Tulare, CA and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Alvarina Riojas, Maria L. Borges and Manuel Mendes.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 3 Margin St., Peabody, Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visting hours at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Burial in the Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
