Obituary For Charles D. Alex
Peabody - Charles D Alex, 92, beloved husband of the late Maria N Alex, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Born in Tripolis, Greece, he was the son of Dimitrios and Polytimi Alexopoulos.
He emigrated from Greece in 1951, married Maria on May 30, 1959 and lived in West Peabody since 1960.
Charles was a successful restauranteur and real estate broker. He spent over a decade in his early years managing fine dining establishments including General Manager of the famous 57 Restaurant of Boston in the 1970s until he turned to more entrepreneurial local establishments including Peabody House of Pizza, North Reading House of Pizza and Derby Square Restaurant of Salem. He moved on to a second career in Real Estate and served as a Broker for well over 3 decades, well into his 80s.
Charles enjoyed sports, most especially routing for his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox, and ensured his children and grandchildren gained the same love of the game. He loved the company of family and friends, sharing a meal, telling jokes and sharing his gift for conversation, even the occasional debate and bantering. His greatest joys in life were his grandchildren, Alexia and Charlie. He is remembered for his generosity and kind heart. Charles was full of love and never hesitated to express it. He also was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church.
For his children, they are grateful for instilling in them an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic and the importance of family.
Charles, also known as Charlie or Kosta to family and friends, will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his two children, James Alex and his wife, Michaela, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Paula Soteropoulos and her husband, Takis, of Peabody, his two grandchildren, Alexia Soteropoulos and her fiancé, Dimitri Pissios, and Charlie Alex; his sister, Panagiota Tsoutsanis of Walpole, his sister-in-law Anna Zaimes of Peabody, who was like his own sister, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Nicholaos Alexopoulos, and his sister, Ioanna Tsipianitopoulou, both of Greece. The family is most grateful to the loving care for the past several years provided by Liana Kamkamidze, who has become part of the family, keeping Charles thriving in his home along with Maria prior to her passing.
