Obituary For George S Velonis

George S Velonis, 102, of Peabody, died Tuesday morning at Continuing Care at Brooksby Village following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Anna (Jimokas) Velonis with whom he shared over 72 years of marriage.

Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Spyros and Anthie (Mortis) Velonis. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1941. He later enlisted with the United States Army and served at the end of WWII before his honorable discharge in 1947.

George was the co-founder of Peabody Supply Company, a plumbing and heating company in Peabody and was the sole owner of the Peabody Car Wash. He was active in the community and was a member of the Lions Club, Ahepa, and was a Mason as well. He was an avid golfer and long-time member of the Salem Country Club in Peabody and upon his retirement, enjoyed wintering and playing golf at Royal Palm Country Club in Naples, FL. He achieved two milestones in his golfing career, first he shot his age at 78 years and had his first Hole-in-One at the age of 87. He was a member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church and St. Katherine’s Church in Naples, FL.

Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his daughter Anthie and her husband Robert Jackson of Salem, his son Stephen and his wife Julia Velonis of Georgetown, his daughter-in-law, Irene Velonis of Newbury, his beloved three grandchildren, Andrew and Hannah Jackson, and Sean and Sheila Jackson and Althea Velonis, his seven great grandchildren, Ethan, Blake, Cora, Nathan, Isabella, Skylar, and Zackary Jackson and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Arthur Velonis, his siblings and their spouses, Artemis and Michael Kandianis, Yeasemon “Jessie” and Paul Maharris, and James and Maureen Velonis.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox, Paleologos St, Peabody followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St, Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
