Joyce: This is Ed Preble. I never knew Pete was I'll much less passing away. The last time I saw him was when I went to a wake for my aunt in Lynn years ago. Her name was Mildred Dyer her son Dick Bacheler. He was associated with the Salvation Army. My Grandfather who I never met was a firefighter in Lynn who died in the Lynn English High School fire in 1924. I remember seeing Pete on day and he had a firefighters helmet that he acquired somewhere. He said he thought it belonged to a relative who had passed away years ago. He said that he and I we're probably related. I've never done any Ansestry research so I don't know. If you have the Helmet perhaps it has a # on it and I could research it. Anyway please accept my sincere condolences for your family's loss. I'm the Bar manager at the VFW in Marblehead. That's why I'm surprised I never got the news of his passing. Edward Preble

Pete was one of the only policemen in town I knew by name. Always approachable and helpful. Having lived in town for over 50 years, my husband and I have fond memories of this gentle, friendly man.. S.Stickland

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Pete, sometimes known to my family as the "Silver Fox". Although we had kids in school at the same time, our real connection was that my dad, Stanley Lane, was his CPA for his business in Salem. He was a gentleman and a really good guy. Dear Joyce and family, As you know, Peter and I worked together for many years – roughly the first ten years of mine and the last ten years of his. He was soft spoken, patient, kind and no matter how many mistakes I would make along the way, always worked with me to get better by helping me to understand where I made an error but never making me feel bad or stupid for it. His uniformed appearance was always impeccable and his attention to detail at whatever he was doing, was inspiring. (He also had the neatest penmanship of any person I have ever met). Regardless of how serious or disturbing some of the calls we went on were, he never seemed to get rattled and, in my opinion, (as a new officer) always seemed to know just what to do, how to do it, when to do it and most importantly what to say and not say. Obviously his decades of experience served him (and the rest of us) well. Years later in my career, I found myself handling the Firearms Instruction process and Firearms Licensing functions for the department, rolls that he and Peter Clark had held prior. It became apparent to me very quickly why both looked so haggard from the tedious, unrelenting licensing process and working with many officers who marksmanship skills were in need of serious work. I'm feeling bad today (and a bit guilty) that in his retirement, despite us both living in town, I rarely saw him. On those rare occasions when our paths would cross, it was always a pleasure to chat with him. He still had the same warm smile and always greeted me so warmly (and genuinely) that it just made you feel good to be with him. You are all in my thoughts at this tough time and are all so lucky to have such a large family (and judging by the kind comments on Facebook) a tremendous network of friends, to lean on during these difficult days, and I hope you will count me among them.
