Obituary For James T. Norton
James Timothy Norton, 88, of Peabody, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 15, 2023, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Joanne (Conway) Norton on October 11, 2020.
Jim was born on June 21, 1935, and raised in South Boston, MA to Patrick and Marie (Guiney) Norton. Always proud of the fact that he was born on what is known as the “longest day of the year”. He was predeceased by his two brothers Robert and Paul.
Jim graduated from South Boston High School. In 1954 he completed a course of study at the US NAVAL school in Imperial Beach, CA and proudly served his country as a communications technician. He was stationed at various bases in the South Pacific. After his service in the Navy, Jim began his proud labor career as a truck driver with the Teamsters. He then completed his apprenticeship and was initiated as a union electrician for the Electrical Contracting Industry of Greater Boston, IBEW Local 103. Later Jim went on to study Occupational Education at Fitchburg State College while working for the MBTA where he served as an MBTA Pension Fund Trustee.
Jim taught at the Prevocational School and at Lynn Tech and also taught night school in Lynn and at the JATC Local 103 and later was appointed as the Assistant Training Director for the JATC Local 103. He was a union steward and elected to the examining board, eventually serving as chairman of the board. He retired from that position in 2000.
Jim and Joanne were married in 1962 and moved to Lynn, MA to start their lives together, where they raised their 3 children.
James and Joanne traveled extensively in their many happy years together and particularly enjoyed their many trips to Las Vegas being sure to take in all of the new shows. He was also a voracious reader and loved trips to the Maine shore, collecting nautical knick knacks along the way. During their 58 years together they made and continued many strong friendships and enjoyed reminiscing about their good times together.
Jim will be most remembered by his electrical students as a teacher you can count on, an authority, an honest advisor and a friend. His family will always hold dear his sense of humor, tender moments of love and his never ending loyalty.
He is predeceased in life by his wife, Joanne. He is survived by his 3 children; Kenneth Norton and his wife Allison of Swampscott, MA, Leslie Cardarelli of Boxford, MA. and Kevin Norton and his wife Erica of Long Beach, CA. Additionally, he will be greatly missed by his 4 grandchildren, Anne, Patrick and Brendan Norton and Shane Cardarelli as well as several nephews and nieces.
