Joan E. (Sylvester) Carlson, 84, of Bethel, ME, formerly of Danvers, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn, ME, surrounded by her loving family. She is the beloved wife of David L. Carlson with whom she spent 55 years of marriage. Born and raised in Danvers, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Lillian M. (Coite) Sylvester.

Joan attended Holten High School in Danvers and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. She went on to work at Ikor in Burlington, where she met her loving husband, David. Later in life Joan completed a second degree in accounting and began a new career as a tax accountant with Phillips, Gerstein, Holber, et al., in Haverhill MA.

Joan was a lifelong Red Sox fan who loved to travel and had an affinity for owning two-seat, convertible sports cars. In 2018, she and David undertook the adventure of a lifetime when they moved to Bethel, ME and built a new home to be close to their three young grandsons.

Joan is survived by her husband David; two daughters, Suzanne E. Carlson of Maplewood, NJ, and Elaine M. Chappell, her husband Jason, and their three sons, Charles, David, and Noah of Shelburne, NH; and many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Joseph H. Sylvester Jr., Gertrude M. Sylvester, and Marjorie M. Tavares.

Visiting hours will be held at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Richard Parish in Danvers at 11 AM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Salem, MA.

The family is grateful to the team of caregivers and healthcare professionals who lovingly cared for Joan at the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the Hospice House Sustaining Fund at Androscoggin Hospice House, 236 Stetson Rd, Auburn, ME 04210.
