Obituary For Metzler F. McIntyre

Metzler “Bud” F. McIntyre, 97, of Peabody, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at Salem Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Daisy (Atkinson) McIntyre with whom he shared over 29 years of marriage with until her passing in 2010.

He was born on August 22, 1926 in Niagara Falls, NY and was the cherished son of the late Metzler and Alferetta (Bigney) McIntyre.

Bud grew up during the Great Depression. A serious childhood illness prevented him from attending public school until the fourth grade and he left school after his 9th year to work in the Receiving Department of Shredded Wheat Company. He then became a machine attendant at Gilman Fanfold Company in Niagara Falls. In 1943 Bud turned 17 and enlisted in the United States Navy.

Bud is a Veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He participated in the First Landing on Lebanon, Cold War duties and Cuban Missile Crisis. He served on several ships including landing craft, seagoing tug, baby and converted carriers, battleships, guided missile heavy cruisers and several destroyers of different classes. Bud earned several medals during his tenure with the Navy: The National Defense American Theatre medal, U.N. Service medal, Korean Conflict medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Expeditionary medal and Good Conduct medal with 4 Stars.

The time he spent in the Navy was some of his happiest and where he learned about machinery. He did his recruit training in Sampson, NY then basic engineering at Great Lakes, IL. Bud was stationed at the Amphibious Training Base Moro Bay. He volunteered for duty with S.L.C.U. #34 and was eventually shipped to the Pacific and set up base at Waipio Point, Pearl Harbor. Bud was shipped to Ulithi Atoll in Western Carolina’s via Perry Island then shipped home for some rest and relaxation in November 1945. Upon his return to duty in January 1946 he served on several ships before being discharged in 1966, having 20 years of service to his country.

In 1961 Bud successfully earned a certificate from the U.S. Navy School, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. He used these skills when he went to work at J.B. Thomas Hospital’s Maintenance Department for 10 years. He then went to work as HVAC technician at Salem Hospital from which he retired after almost 20 years. Bud continued working in the HVAC field for several years helping local small businesses with their HVAC needs.

Bud enjoyed traveling to Vegas, Foxwoods and going on cruises with his late wife, Daisy. He enjoyed meeting up with friends and playing Keno at Century House which he did until the last month of his life. Bud lived his life the way he wanted. He was a hard worker, proud Veteran and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all he met.

Bud is survived by his daughter, Bella Jalbert and her husband Don of Epping, NH; his stepchildren, Liz Milne and her husband Dana of Peabody, Bob Mello and his wife Terry of Peabody, John Mello and his husband Carl Scheffy of Haverhill and David Mello and his wife Beth of Raymond, NH; his sister, Nancy McIntyre of Niagara Falls; his 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sadly, in addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his siblings, Malcolm and John McIntyre, Bernice Gigielle and Mary Ann Octaviano.

Visiting hours will be held at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody, on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 4PM to 7PM. His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday morning at 10AM in the funeral home followed by his interment in Greenlawn Cemetery in Salem, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bud’s memory to the American Cancer Society by visiting www.cancer.org.
