Obituary For M.Pearl Carney

M. Pearl (Cronin) Carney passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning at the age of 93, surrounded by her loving family at her lifelong South Peabody home. She was the devoted wife of the late Leo J “Nino” Carney, and her legacy is one of love, resilience, family, and a life well-lived.

Born in Salem, Pearl was the daughter of the late Francis and Agnes Pearl (Calder) Cronin. Raised and educated in Peabody, she graduated from St. John’s High School, and worked as a telephone operator for New England Telephone, where she met some of her closest lifelong friends.

Pearl is survived by her four children: John and his wife Mary of Peabody, Joseph of Peabody, James and his wife Laurie of Westford, her daughter Janice, and her husband Joseph Barkowski III of Peabody. Pearl leaves behind a legacy of love in her cherished 5 grandchildren: Ryan, Ali, Emily, Meghan, and Colin, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her 13 siblings - Thomas, Daniel, John, Earl, Joseph, Wayne, Jerome, Gladys, Shirley, Eileen, Agnes “Sis,” June, and Phyllis - Pearl was the enduring heart of a large Irish Catholic family. Her life was a testament to her deep Irish Catholic roots, and she was an integral part of the close-knit South Peabody community.

Born during the Great Depression and growing up during World War II, Pearl embodied the strength and resilience of the greatest generation. Known for her warm hospitality, “Pearly” loved hosting family parties and reunions, including over 60 years of Christmas eve open houses. Her home was a place of joy, laughter, and love—a gathering point for generations. She loved to watch her 5 grandchildren’s sports and activities and showed them her passion for her beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday January, 3 at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by her Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
