Obituary For Patrick B. Calnan
LYNN - Patrick B. (Pat) Calnan, 95 years old, passed away on Thursday February 22nd surrounded by his loving family. Pat was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen (Mannion) Calnan, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. He was the son of the late John and Bridget Calnan, who immigrated to the United States from Ireland. Pat was born in Lynn in 1929 and was a lifelong Lynn resident.
Pat worked his entire life in the Construction Trades. He was an accomplished bricklayer and stone mason and in the 80’s and 90’s he worked as Clerk of the Works and Project Manager for EDIC in Lynn. After retiring from EDIC, he worked for many years with his son John, owner of Calnan Construction. He used his construction talents to design and build the family home at 28 Bulfinch Terrace, where he raised his eight children. Pat spent many hours gardening and was very proud of his vegetables and flowers. He loved the company of everyone and enjoyed singing Irish songs and playing his harmonica. Pat was a mentor to many people throughout his life, educating others on such topics as Zoning Regulations, Building Codes, Construction Design and the Irish Gaelic Language.
Pat served in the United States Army in the early 50’s and was honorably discharged, having reached the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and assisted the church on numerous projects. He served on Lynn’s Zoning Board of Appeals for 50 years; he recently received citations from both Mayor Jared Nicholson and the Lynn City Council for his long and outstanding service to the city. He was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 3. Fiercely proud of his Irish heritage, he was a member of the Lynn chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for 67 years. Along with his brothers, Pat helped build the AOH member’s hall in the 70’s. His expert brickwork can be seen in the member’s lounge to this day. Most of all, he loved his family, both in America and across the Atlantic in Ireland.
He is survived by his six children: Pauline Coulon (Paul), Patricia O'Brien (Richard), Priscilla Calnan, Maura DiBartolomeo (Angelo), Catherine Polakiewicz (James) and Joseph Calnan (Michelle). He was also the Father of the late Patrick J. (PJ) Calnan and John J. Calnan. Grandfather to Karyn Miller (Troy) and Kevin Coulon (Veronica); Emily Broderick (Mike); Kate DiBartolomeo; Patrick Calnan, Shannon Calnan, Rachel Calnan, Jack Calnan and their Mother Kerry Calnan; Jay Polakiewicz, Lily Polakiewicz and Josh Polakiewicz; Joseph Calnan Jr., Daniel Calnan and Sean Calnan. Great Grandfather to Mairin, Shane, Hannah, Elowen, Lochlan, Rowan, Cora and Eamon. Also survived by his loving brother, Edward Calnan and his wife, Susan and his sister-in-law, Mary (Forry) Calnan. Predeceased by his brothers Jack, James, Bill, Frank and sisters Margaret and Eileen. Pat is also survived by dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins in the U.S. and Ireland.
