Obituary For Roger J Govaert

Roger Jan Govaert, 54, of Peabody, Mass died Tuesday, November 1st, 2022, of complications related to acute myeloid leukemia.

Roger was born in Stoneham, MA on April 10, 1968, the son of Hans and Elise Govaert-Smets of Peabody. He was respected as a leader in both his professional career as Head of Marketing Operations for Mettler-Toledo Inc. and in his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Fitchburg State University and a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from University of Phoenix AZ. As a veteran of the US Army, he completed two tours of duty in Iraq. He and his former wife Valerie had two daughters, Madison and Kaelen. His daughters were Roger’s pride and joy, his reason for being.

His ardent struggle with leukemia lasted for 18 months. Those near him would always say that he made the tough fight look easy. There were many people outside his family, doctors, work colleagues, and friends who stood by him. These are Roger’s own words, “I am immensely grateful to all of you, and you know who you are!”

Roger is survived by his daughters Madison and Kaelen, his mother Elise Govaert of Peabody, Mass and his brothers Fred and Steven Govaert and his wife Eileen. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews Serena, Riley, Reagan, Cormac, Casey, Grady, Megan and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his father Hans Govaert.

The family of Roger Govaert expresses their most sincere thanks to all who, in various forms, have given words, intentions and other forms of support, during this difficult time.

His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Lake St, Peabody.

Roger, it was my honor to serve as one of your nurses but also to call you a friend. I enjoyed our Saturday morning visits, chatting about our families and sharing our many mutual love for things. I hope you are enjoying the wind on your face and the roar of the bike beneath you as I know that's what you are enjoying now. May you rest in peace and finally be free of cancer. You were a pleasure to know and I will treasure the laughs we shared. God Bless you my friend.

Mrs. Govaert, Fred, Steven, Madison and Kaelen. My wife Cheryl and I want to express our deepest sympathy for Roger's passing. So many fond memories from teenage years spent with you all! Roger gave Cheryl and I comfort, strength and encouragement last winter with Cheryl's battle with AML. He graciously shared all he could to help us to understand the treatment process. He fought his battle with courage and dignity. We are forever grateful for his support. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all!

Going back to 1980, our group spent most of our teenage years together. Plenty of fun and laughs and trouble ensued. We laughed and cried and fought and played and had each other's backs through thick and thin. Roger and I saved each other's butts a good many times. I always admired his independence and strength. Spending time 🏕 nag with Roger and his parents and going to canabe lake together. Condolences to you all. Hopefully there is more to heaven than Resting in Peace. Have a blast up there Roger and we'll meet again one day.

Unfortunately I did not work with Roger long enough and he was always forthright in helping and contributing to people in our industry. Even though we were competitors I had the utmost respect for Roger and always kidded with each other, but when it came doing the work he was incredibly diligent in every way. Roger you will be missed!

Having worked with Roger many years I can truly say how honored and privileged we all were know and work with him. He was the ultimate professional during work and a great friend to talk with while discussing very fast motorcycles, he rode much faster than me, I can certainly tell you that.
