Obituary For Sotiros "Steve" Polemenakos
Steve Polemenakos, 85, of Marblehead, MA, son of Demetrios and Konstantina (Catsos) Polemenakos of Vordonia, Sparta, Greece immigrated to Salem MA in 1952.
After surviving the war and the loss of this mother, Steve came to America at 16 years old with the intention of planting roots forever.
He worked tirelessly shining shoes and working in leather factories and later went on to own four successful companies, Hercules Bananas, Zestee Fuel, Sparta Realty and S & H Realty.
Steve was married the love of his life for 63 years, Heidi (Theophilopoulos) having wed in 1957 and always said “he married her whole family”, as they embraced the boy whose home was at the Salem YMCA. Together, Steve and Heidi successfully fulfilled his promise to his father by bringing all of his sisters to America. Steve was proud to have served his county in the Army Reserve and passed away on Memorial Day 5/31/2021.
Steve and Heidi had three daughters, Connie Markos and her husband George L of Ipswich, Patty Allain and fiancée’ Brian Floyd of Middleton and Tasia Proulx and Peter Vousboukis of Marblehead. Steve loved to host parties, spend time in Greece and Clearwater Beach, and socializing with all his tenants. He also took pride in his garden, making his homemade wine and travelling, but most of all, he “cherished” his family and friends. He was a member of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church , St. Val’s Men’s Club, Jordon Lodge AF & AM, Order of Ahepa Aristides Chapter 50, Logganiko Society, Hellenic Benevolent Society, and also was a Mason.
He leaves behind six grandchildren who were his biggest love, Tatiana Markos, Elias Markos, Brittini Bochniak and her husband Kyle, Chelsee Allain, Joseph Proulx and Olivia (Sotiria) Proulx. He was excited and looking forward to his first great grandchild and being a Papou-Papou to Baby Bochniak in July. He leaves behind his sisters, Eleni Theodorakopoulos of Lynn, Panagiota & Kosta Venetos of Salem, Effie & George Panagakis of Chelmsford and Dina & Peter Tsiklis of Chelmsford and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind several godchildren including Nick Nikolopoulos who he spent every day with and loved him like a son. He was predeceased by his sister, Penelope Karedis. His funeral service will be held at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, Friday, June 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. At the request of the family, attendees are recommended to wear a mask and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. In Lieu of Flowers, Donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
