Obituary For Sr. Dorothy McCormick, SNDdeN

Sister Dorothy McCormick, SNDdeN, 82, went peacefully home to her good God on December 9, 2023, at St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center in Ipswich, MA. She was born outside Philadelphia, PA to Raymond and Anna (Devine). Sr. Dorothy entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur on August 9, 1959, making her First Vows in 1962 and Perpetual Vows in 1967.

Sr. Dorothy graduated from Trinity College in 1964 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1966 with an MBA degree in Finance. She earned her PHD in International Studies from John Hopkins University in 1988.

Sr. Dorothy generously shared her expertise as a high school math teacher at Trinity Preparatory School in Illchester, MD and the Academy of Notre Dame K Street Washington, DC. Sr. Dorothy was the treasurer, vice president and interim president at Trinity University, formerly Trinity College, Washington DC, and the Province Treasurer of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Maryland Province from 1966-1974.

In 1987 Sr. Dorothy answered the call to the missions in Kenya as a Research Fellow and later became the Director at the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi. For 32 years Sr. Dorothy trained countless students in development and research which helped bring people out of poverty. She brought her many gifts and talents to become a vital and loved member of the Kenya Unit of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

Sr. Dorothy was predeceased by her sister, Sr. Claire McCormick, SNDdeN and her brother, Raymond and her niece, Mary Ellen. She also leaves her nephew, Raymond (Chip) McCormick and nieces, Suzanne Kelleher and Kathryn Gresh all of Pennsylvania, grand nieces and nephews as well her Sisters and Associates in the Notre Dame community, her many friends and the devoted staff of the St. Julie Billiart Residential Care Center. She will be greatly missed for her gentleness and bright smile.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday, December 15 at 10:30 am at Our Lady Queen Chapel in Ipswich, MA, preceded by a wake service at 9:00am in the chapel. Burial will be on Tuesday, December 19 at 10:30 AM at the Sisters of Notre Dame Cemetery, 4985 Ilchester Road, Ilchester MD.
